Aim | To be able identify main ideas and supporting details of the text and create a brochure of Interesting Places in Malaysia. |
Objectives | By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to: (i) Answer ‘Wh’ questions. (ii) Identify main ideas and supporting details. (iii) Produce an attractive brochure of interesting places in Malaysia. |

Set Induction ± 5 minutes | 1) Teacher shows photographs or pictures of places of interest in Malaysia using power point presentation. 2) Get pupils to describe what they see in the picture. 3) Teacher asks pupils if they have visited those places. |
Pre-reading ± 7 minutes | 1) Teacher asks pupils to look at the textbook. Get pupils to read the first and second paragraphs silently. 2) Teacher check pupils’ comprehension with ‘Wh’ questions. a) Which state in Malaysia did the pupils from the Malaysia Education Programme visit? b) Which place in Sarawak did the pupils from the Malaysia Education Programme visit? |
While-reading ± 15 minutes | 1) Teacher divides pupil into 10 pairs. 2) Teacher asks pupils to read paragraph 1 and 2. 3) Teacher asks pupils to identify the main ideas and the supporting details. 4) Teacher asks pupils to write the main ideas and the supporting details on the board. E.g. The main idea for paragraph 1 is ‘In Sarawak, they visited the Niah Caves National Park.’ The supporting details are ‘In the caves, they saw many bats and rock paintings. They also got the chance to try the famous bird’s nest soup.’ 5) Teacher distributes the worksheet to pupils. 6) Pupils do the worksheet on their own. They have to sequence the sentence based on the text. 7) Teacher asks them to change the worksheet with their friends. 8) Teacher discusses the answer with pupils. |
Post-reading ± 27 minutes | 1) Teacher assigns pupils to create a brochure about interesting places in Malaysia of at least two places of interest in Malaysia. 3) Teacher asks pupils to present their brochure in the next lesson. |
